Michael is a senior associate in our Intellectual Property & Technology (IP&T) and Product Liability Services Groups. He is also a member of our national Energy, Resources & Infrastructure and Medical & Pharmaceutical Industry Groups.
His expertise focuses on competition and consumer law and intellectual property and information technology.
Michael specialises in providing competition and consumer law advice. He advises clients on both the restrictive trade practices parts of the Competition and Consumer Act, as well as the Australian Consumer Law. Michael is experienced in dealing with the ACCC. He has provided advice, training and representation for a wide range of clients, including in the medical devices, pharmaceutical, manufacturing, FMCG, property, energy and sustainable energy industries.
Michael also provides advice on the commercialisation and exploitation of technology, the protection of clients’ brands and the enforcement of their IP rights. He assists clients with the structuring, drafting and negotiation of a range of licensing agreements, development and collaboration agreements and other technology-related arrangements.
Michael is one of only six private practice lawyers in Australia to have met the requirements for the US-based Certified Licensing Professional qualification.
Michael originally qualified as a solicitor in the UK at Lovell White Durrant (now Hogan Lovells). Michael is a member of the Law Council of Australia's Competition and Consumer Law Committee. He is also a current committee member and a former chairperson of the New South Wales division of the Intellectual Property Society of Australia and New Zealand, as well as a member of the Licensing Executives Society of Australia and New Zealand, the Copyright Society of Australia and the New South Wales Society for Computers and the Law.
Michael presents on both competition and consumer law and IP issues. He has been widely published in publications as diverse as Marketing Magazine, the Australian Construction Law Bulletin, the Journal of Banking and Finance Law and Practice, the Internet Law Bulletin and Australian Life Scientist.
